Sherry talks about "Entering the Integral Age" The
philosopher, Jean Gebser, posited that the evolution of consciousness
took place in five stages: the Archiac, the Magical, the Mythic, the
Mental-Rational and the Integral. We are, by all accounts, deep
into the Mental-Rational period. This period is the culmination
of egoistic dualism and reliance upon the mind, to the exclusion of
all forms of 'knowing'. It is the period that Vedanta describes
as the Kali Yuga. Gebser taught that, as this period ended, we
have the opportunity to bifurcate into a new Golden Age, which he
called the Integral. In order to do so, however, we would have
to 'go back' and re-integrate all of the lost practices of the earlier
structures of consciousness so the ego/mind would no longer be the
dominant modality. This painting, Entering the Integral Age,
portrays the journey back into imagination, intuition and viscerality.
It leads the way for us to re-integrate non-mental ways of relating to
the Earth and One Another through androgenous, predominantly
nature-based practices of gardening, gathering, and tribal
dancing. This integration points humankind, once again, toward
what Gebser called The Ever-Present Origin, instead of toward the
self-absorbed egoistic I-ness so prevalent in a deficient
Mental-Rational structure. One Life! One
